of terrorism. while some romney advisers argue they should keep their focus on the economy, politico says plans are in the works for mitt romney to deliver a major foreign policy speech shortly after wednesday's debate. what do you think of that? you think he should do that? >> yes. i think, as i said, right after the killing, that wasn't the time to talk about this. >> right. >> now is the time, several weeks later, to talk about it. john heilemann, the lead in "the new york times," mistake in faith and security seen at libya mission before benghazi raid. response to the june bomb raised confidence in local guards. this benghazi story is an absolute mess. i think -- i've heard stuart stevens as saying let's focus on the economy. i think stuart stevens is exactly right. americans don't care as much in the polls about foreign policy. but several weeks later after this, i think it's very legitimate now that the press is going in and a couple of weeks have passed since the ambassador's death, now, yes. i mean, he's got a responsibility to talk about how badly the white house bungled this. >> i thi

trying to dig the economy out of a massive hole. we were facing this economic collapse and he came into office and he has a long way to go. he needs four more years to make the difference that he's -- that we're starting to make now. and that we just need to believe that his policies do make a difference. he can now point to the data to say, look, they're making that difference. >> so that tells me even though we for so many people, the psychological number, eight, not that we're under the 8% mark in unemployment, do the obama folks think we're not over the hump, economically speaking? >> they concede that and that people are still hurting and what matters to people at home is not some number that the labor department puts out, but their own economic circumstance and whether they have a job, whether they know somebody unemployed and this is very abstract. so people are still hurting. but in terms of the political gamesmanship, 8% is an important marker because when the president passed the stimulus, one of his economists projected, it wasn't a promise, but a projection that 8% woul

of the economy, and where the jobs are now? >> it says, quite frankly, suzanne, that you're seeing steady hiring. not robust hiring, but steady hiring, and when you look at the unemployment rate dropping to 7.8% we know that there are people who are getting part-time jobs. there are people who are starting their own companies or starting to work for themselves from home. that's what is moving those numbers. you see that the private sector added 104,000 jobs, and the government sect or added 10,000. we saw health care jobs created. more than 44,000 there. this has been a trend for a couple of years. about 16,000 jobs lost over there in the manufacturing sector, which is, of course, very, very important to some of these battleground states, suzanne. >> christy, some of the attacks from conservatives, such as jack welch, saying they don't believe the numbers. they believe the books are cooked essentially. explain the process of how we reach these numbers today? >> there's spin, and then there are conspiracy theories, and the spin, which is valid, if spin can be valid, is that, you know, look, you s

a focus on fixing the nation's economy, mitt romney in recent days has been stepping up his attacks on the president on the issue of national security. and specifically lately on who's a better friend of israel. and there are signs the obama campaign is paying attention. at a military academy in pennsylvania, mitt romney tried to make the case for a new commander in chief. romney once again questioned the president's recent description of events in the middle east as bumps in the road. >> i sure as heck don't consider iran becoming nuclear a bump in the road. we need someone who recognizes the seriousness of what's ahead and is willing to lead. >> reporter: romney's tough talk on iran follows israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu's drawing attention at the united nations to the nuclear worries. >> a red line should be drawn right here. >> reporter: just days after the president declined to meet with netanyahu in new york, the two leaders spoke over the phone. but then hours later romney, who enjoys a muchier reonith netanyahu got his own call chatting with the israeli leader whi

through the debates, and look once again to the economy as the determining factor in this election. >> you know, jim, we heard from kevin madden, the romney campaign adviser on getting romney ready for this debate tomorrow, here's what he said. >> just trying to get the governor familiar with the head to head one on one format has been a focus because in all the previous debates that we have had, it has been, you know, nine people on stage, trying to -- trying to capture a policy in 90 seconds. the format here is a little different, a little moreting us going back and forth, how the single moderator will be controlling the debate between two candidates. >> so we know, jim, they have been at this for a couple of weeks. mentioned the big news today, i say big being semifacetious, we know romney had chipotle lunch. he's been prepping, prepping and prepping. looking to the next 24 hours, will they really be practicing up until, you know, tomorrow night, 9:00? >> reporter: i think so, brooke. what we're told by the campaign earlier today is that mitt romney will actually do his debate walk thro

the economy. it has been a challenge a bit for them. but you point out that really a lot of this race has been thus far on style, on likability, so romney -- romney, what, needs to talk about his family, your words. let me quote you, you say yes, he's tried to do that many, many times before, but there is always hoping that this time it will work. why will it work this time? >> it might work because more people are watching. when he talked about it during the convention, the ratings were really very, very low on that. and he had to share the platform with everyone else. with christie and with rubio. this time around it is him versus the president. and this is his chance to throw out some relatable points, to say things like i'm in public service because of my father. i want to improve the country because of my family. i think if he can throw one or two pointsike that, he can turn it around. but don't expect him to start crying. his not that guy. he shouldn't pretend to be that guy. he shouldn't pretend to be ronald reagan because he's not ronald reagan. he should simply run on his credentials

. the economy was different then. today, governor romney attempted to drive home the point that proposed budget cuts will hurt the state. >> someone has calculated how many jobs will be lost in pennsylvania if the trillion dollars in cuts go through. it is 39,000 jobs. we cannot afford that. we recognize the consequence of what the president is doing is severe for the people in pennsylvania, severe for the entire nation and, in fact, because of the world's demand for american leadership, it is severe to the entire world. >>shepard: the governor could have his work cut out for him. the most recent real clear politics average of the national poll shows rebound with an eight-point advantage in that state. carl cameron is in boston. governor romney continued on the attack on foreign policy today. >>carl: he was at the university which was a strong back drop for it and had a conversation with israeli prime minister binyamin netanyahu seconds after the president. as he addressed that group, governor romney went after the president for his dismissive assertion that so much of what has happened in the
